FREE Injury Rehab Network event – Physiotherapist, Angela Jackson

Managing the overloaded younger athlete

Angela Jackson is a Chartered Physiotherapist who has spent the last 34 years seeking to understand why some young athletes get injured, yet others don’t. As a youngster, Angela played every sport going before developing a series of knee injuries that halted her sporting dreams. Her determination to educate young athletes on reducing their injury risk has fuelled a career that has taken her from Canada to working with national teams, clubs and schools across many sports becoming an expert in understanding all aspects of youth athlete development.

For 15 years, she has been the Physiotherapist and Strength and Conditioning Consultant for Cheshire Cricket Board supporting the Emerging Player Programme, their coach education programme and providing workshops for parents and athletes on injury prevention and performance. She has also created coaching resources for the England & Wales Cricket Board Coaching Association “Wings to Fly” programme. Through her work with cricketers, Angela became aware of the number of young children playing sport with low back pain. She is passionate about reducing the incidence of lumbar stress fractures in younger athletes through raising awareness and education.

Her passion for sharing her knowledge is evident whether she is presenting on athlete development or the prevention of lumbar stress fractures through talks and workshops in schools, clubs and sporting organisations. She has created the course Developing the Younger Athlete for fellow professionals available through Therapist Learning online.

Angela Jackson – Chartered Physiotherapist

Angela’s presentation, ‘Managing the overloaded younger athlete’ will consider how the pressures on young athletes often exceed the ability of their body to adapt and to cope. Angela will discuss the importance of education and early identification of the factors that contribute to injuries and illness in the growing athlete. She will cover the key areas that need to be monitored and addressed when developing younger athletes, including Overtraining Syndrome and Relative Energy Deficiency in Sports. She will share how she monitors workload and the reaction to training including nutritional intake.

The talk from Angela will last around 30 – 40 minutes followed by time for questions and answers.

About the Injury Rehab Network

Following the success of the Injury Rehab Network in 2019 and 2020, we are extremely honoured and proud to have a schedule of events with such exceptional guest speakers in 2021 in partnership with BASRaT. Angela’s talk follows a fantastic start to the year with expert guest speakers football physio Gary Lewin, rehabilitation and conditioning specialist Dr Claire Minshull, The Shoulder Doc, Professor Len Funk, Diane Ryding Head Physiotherapist for the Foundation and Youth Development Phases at Manchester United Football Club and Professor Bill Ribbans.

The events include talks from expert guest speakers and will be online initially. In the summer, we hope to return to face to face events and will also have a live stream.

“The Steroplast Injury Rehab Network is a superb and innovative idea that can only benefit therapists. To provide an opportunity for local multidisciplinary therapists to learn from each other and others, whilst networking and introducing people that can help each other is simply groundbreaking. Having had the pleasure to attend a recent event, the positive discussion and energy in the room was palpable. Steroplast have truly hit it out of the park with this!” – Mike James – The Endurance Physio and Director at Sports Injury Fix

Sterosport is an arm of Steroplast Healthcare dedicated to supporting sports professionals in Manchester and the surrounding area. In 2019, Sterosport established the Injury Rehab Network as a means for sports injury professionals to network, share ideas and collaborate. The events provide a fantastic opportunity for Continuous Professional Development (CPD) for any therapists, physios, rehabilitators, or other sports professionals to keep up to date with the latest thinking, developments, and evidence in the sector.

The format of each event is a keynote speech, followed by a discussion and facilitated networking. The Injury Rehab Network organisers work hard to source well-known authorities or personalities in sport. Previous speakers include Professor Bill Ribbans, Diane Ryding,  Professor Len Funk, Dr Claire Minshull, expert football physio Gary Lewin, endurance cyclist Josh Quigley, Paralympian Hannah Dines, leading physiotherapist Dave Fevre, Academic and elite sport rehabilitator Lee Herrington, Prof Shah Khan (The Scan Doctor), Consultant hand, wrist and elbow surgeon Mr David Murray and Andy Hosgood, co-founder of Summit Physiotherapy.
